How transmission diagnostics actually work
A lot of shops will hear “slipping” or “hard shifting” and immediately quote a rebuild. That’s lazy. We test the fluid, scan for codes, road-test the vehicle, and isolate the real issue.
Often the fix is:
- A fluid service (especially on cars 60,000+ miles)
- A failed solenoid in the valve body
- A wiring or sensor issue
- A worn but repairable clutch (manual)
Sometimes it really is a rebuild. When that’s the case, we’ll quote it straight and walk you through your options: rebuild here, install a remanufactured unit, or replace with a used transmission. Each has trade-offs.
Common transmission symptoms
- Slipping (engine revs but car doesn’t accelerate)
- Hard or delayed shifting
- Whining, grinding, or clunking noises
- Burnt smell (overheated fluid)
- Check engine or transmission warning light
- Fluid leaks (red for automatic, often less obvious for CVT/manual)
A note on fluid services
If your transmission fluid is dark, smells burnt, or you’ve never had it serviced and you’re past 60,000 miles, ask us about a fluid service. On many vehicles, this is a $200–$400 service that can prevent a $3,000+ rebuild. On a few vehicles, fluid services can actually cause problems — we know which ones, and we’ll tell you straight.
